11-1-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football, girls tennis and soccer, College football, Middle school soccer, volleyball and wrestling, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

A week ago, it appeared the Charlotte 49ers’ football program was in disarray.

Linebacker Prince Bemah, interim head coach Pete Rossomando and offensive lineman Ashton Gist (from left to right) at Tuesday’s Charlotte 49ers weekly news conference.

Not only had the 49ers’ head coach Will Healy been fired, but the team’s statistical rankings were all at the bottom of the conference and nation.

And they had a 1-7 overall record and 0-4 Conference USA record after getting routed by Florida International 34-15 in the 49ers’ homecoming contest that was 34-0 before a pair of late scores by the 49ers.

Heading to Rice last week, Charlotte was a 13 1/2 point underdog after offensive line coach Pete Rossomando was promoted to interim head coach.

The host Owls scored on their first possession and held leads of 14-7 and 17-14 before the 49ers unleashed a school-record offensive effort and a suffocating defensive effort in what became a 56-23 road win.

The 56 points were Charlotte’s record for Conference USA and FBS games in its history.

It also made the 49ers the largest winner – by 33 points – as a road team that entered the game 3 1-2 games behind its opponent in the standings since 1966.

Rossomando’s team got a spark from two local players – linebacker Prince Bemah from Huss and running back Calvin Camp from Shelby.

Bemah, a 2019 Huss graduate, had six tackles to lead a defense that limited Rice to a season-low 370 total yards.

Camp, a 2017 Shelby graduate who hadn’t gotten a rushing attempt since the first game of the season, picked up 80 yards rushing and one touchdown in eight carries.

“Prince had one of his best games curing his time in Charlotte,” Rossomando said on Tuesday during the school’s weekly news conference. “And Calvin Camp gave us a spark and our run game really came together.”

This week, Charlotte (2-7, 1-4) returns home to play perennial league power Western Kentucky (5-4, 3-2) and will again be an underdog; On Tuesday, Western Kentucky was considered a 16 1/2-point favorite.

Can the 49ers rally up again to knock off another favored opponent.

“We all know as a defense that we have nothing to lose,” Bemah said. “But we have the confidence and we always have the confidence that we can do it.”
