The power of 30 is a real thing in Carolina Panthers history.

The number is a reference to rushing attempts.

And the success/failure rates are quite simple: Run the football 30 or more times and usually win or run less than 30 times and lose.

In the Panthers’ 28-year history, the team is 156-30-1 with 30 or more carries and 59-207 when they don’t.

In last Sunday’s 26-16 loss to Arizona, Carolina had 13 carries for 40 yards. And with the Panthers leading 10-3 at the half, they chose two running plays to opening the second half and never ran the football again.

In Matt Rhule’s 37-game tenure, his teams have rushed 30 or more times only 10 times (8-2 record).

That successful record is in stark comparison to the Panthers’ 3-24 record when they don’t have 30 carries under Rhule.

Hosting the defensive-minded San Francisco 49ers on Sunday will challenge the Panthers’ running game. But if Carolina is able to run the football 30 or more times, it is likely to win; The Panthers are 6-1 all-time against the 49ers with 30 or more carries with the lone defeat coming in a 31-28 overtime loss in 1998.

West Lincoln’s Mason Avery rushed for a Lincoln County-record 397 yards in Friday’s 35-26 homecoming win over Newton-Conover.

Avery passed the previous record-holder by 79 yards; Lincolnton’s Tyshaun Harris rushed for 318 yards against North Lincoln on Oct. 27, 2017.

The previous West Lincoln school record was held by Clay Leatherman, who rushed for 279 yards against Bessemer City on Oct. 24, 1986.
