10-6-22 roundup: Pro basketball, football, baseball and soccer, High school football, girls tennis, boys soccer and volleyball, College football, Middle school football and softball, Auto racing
By Richard Walker
When Kings Mountain hosts South Point on Friday, it’ll renew a rivalry that is one of the oldest in each school’s history.
A series that began in 1924 will have some high stakes as the winner will take sole possession of first place in the league with three games to play. Belmont/South Point leads the all-time series 35-33-1.

This week’s game also reminds some of a contest with similar high stakes in 1979 that saw an eventual South Point state championship team survive one of the greatest tests of its 14-0 season against a Kings Mountain team featuring Kevin Mack, the school’s first national champion and first NFL player.
Mack played for Clemson’s 1981 unbeaten national championship football team and later played in a pair of AFC championship games for the Cleveland Browns.
In 1979, Mack’s 1-yard touchdown run in the middle of the fourth quarter gave the Mountaineers a 12-8 lead before South Point had a late touchdown run and late defensive stand to rally for the win.
One of Mack’s eventual Clemson teammates, Jeff Williams, completed a 50-yard pass to Boone Davis that set up South Point’s 4-yard go-ahead touchdown run by eventual NFL head coach Perry Fewell with 2:30 to play.
Still, Mack and Avery Smith broke loose for big runs that gave the Mountaineers possession at the South Point 10. But Williams deflected a Kings Mountain pass in the end zone and eventual Catawba College standout Todd Armstrong intercepted to preserve the Red Raiders’ victory.
South Point would claim the N.C. 3A state title seven weeks later in a 34-13 victory at Ahoskie.
Here’s a look at the other Cleveland/Gaston/Lincoln games:
Burns at Thomas Jefferson: Burns won 64-7 last season in the only meeting between the schools.
Christ the King at Mountain Island Charter: Mountain Island Charter leads 4-0 in the series, including a 60-6 victory last season.
Cramer at Ashbrook: The series is tied 4-all after last season’s 31-20 Cramer victory.
East Gaston at Bessemer City: East Gaston leads 12-4 in the series, including a 48-28 victory last season.
East Lincoln at Foard: Foard leads 19-18-2 in the series, but East Lincoln won 57-0 last season.
Forestview at Huss: Forestview leads 16-8 in the series, including a 44-20 victory last season.
Highland Tech at Cherryville: Cherryville leads 18-0 in the series that began in 2002, including 50-14 last season.
Newton-Conover at West Lincoln: Newton-Conover leads 23-5 in the series, but West Lincoln won 13-7 in overtime last season.
North Gaston at Crest: Crest leads 21-3 in the series, including 39-14 last season for a 10th straight victory.
North Lincoln at St. Stephens: North Lincoln won 26-0 last season in the only meeting between the schools.
West Caldwell at Lincolnton: Lincolnton leads 18-12-1 in the series, including 27-7 laste season.

Pro baseball
Two of the area’s three major leaguers are on participating teams in the major league playoffs that begin on Friday.
Jeffrey Springs, a 2011 South Point High graduate) went 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA in 33 appearances (25 starts) for the Tampa Bay Rays, who open a best-of-three American League Wild Card series at the Cleveland Guardians on Friday. Springs is in his fifth major league season, first with the Texas Rangers (2018-19) and Boston Red Sox (2020) and with the Rays since 2021.
And Alec Burleson (East Lincoln 2017) hit .188 with one home run and three RBIs in 16 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, who open a best-of-three National League Wild Card series at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Burleson in September became the first East Lincoln High product to play major league baseball when he was promoted from Class AAA Memphis. (On Thursday it was announced Burleson wouldn’t be on the Cardinals’ wild card series roster.)
Also playing in the major leagues this season was former Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey baseball standout Emilio Pagan, who went 4-6 with nine saves and a 4.43 ERA in 59 appearances for the Minnesota Twins.
Pro basketball
Former Grier Middle School and Ashbrook High School standout Isaiah Whaley was waived by the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday.
Originally signed with the team as a free agent on September 12, Whaley also starred at Evelyn Mack Academy in Charlotte and appeared in 138 games (72 starts) in five seasons (2017-22) at UConn. A 6-9 forward, Whaley earned Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2020-21 after averaging career-highs in steals (1.0) and blocks (2.6).
Whaley was a part of the Hornets’ NBA 2K23 Summer League roster but did not see action and had appeared in one preseason game for the Hornets and grabbed one rebound in four minutes played.
If none of the other 29 NBA teams makes a waiver claim within 48 hours of his release, he will be signed by the Hornets and assigned to the franchise’s G-League franchise in Greensboro.
