10-5-23 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball and soccer, High school football and volleyball, College football, Middle school football and softball, NASCAR
By Richard Walker
It’s rare for perennial power South Point to endure losing streaks and even more rare for them to last 3 games.
But that’s where the Red Raiders could find themselves after Friday’s home game against unbeaten Kings Mountain.
A loss would give South Point its first 3-game losing streak since 2016 and only the 7th 3-game losing streak (or longer) in the past 29 seasons.
Interestingly, the 2016 season that saw an early-season 3-game losing streak that left the Red Raiders 1-3 ended with a 12-4 overall record and a N.C. 3A state championship.
That South Point team, coached by Mickey Lineberger, had future NFL tight end Nick Muse on its roster.
And, ironically enough, the first future Red Raiders’ NFL product Koren Robinson was on the 1997 team that lost 4 straight games.
The 1997 team also is South Point’s last before it adopted the “Red Bone” offense derived from the Delaware Wing T formation the Red Raiders have used ever since.
Other 3-game losing streaks in the previous 29 seasons came in 2001, 1998, 1996 (3- and 4-game losing streaks) and 1995.
Here’s a look at each of Friday’s matchups in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:
Ashbrook at Cramer: Ashbrook leads the all time series 5-4 including a 30-22 win last season.
Crest at North Gaston: Crest leads the all time series 22-3 including a 73-6 win last season.
Huss at Forestview: Forestview leads the all time series 16-9 but Huss won 12-7 last season.
Kings Mountain at South Point: South Point leads the all time series that began in 1924 by a 35-34-1 margin but Kings Mountain won 31-20 last season.
Bessemer City at East Gaston: East Gaston leads the all time series 13-4 including a 49-0 win last season.
Cherryville at Highland Tech: Cherryville leads the all time series 19-0 including a 47-0 win last season.
Thomas Jefferson at Burns: Burns leads the all time series 2-0 including a 48-6 win last season.
Foard at East Lincoln: The all time series is tied 19-19-2 with East Lincoln winning 63-3 last season.
St. Stephens at North Lincoln: North Lincoln leads the all time series 2-0 including a 28-21 win last season.
Lincolnton at West Caldwell: Lincolnton lead the all time series that began in 1922 by a 25-14-1 margin and won 42-13 last season.
West Lincoln at Newton-Conover: Newton-Conover leads the all time series 23-6 but West Lincoln won 35-26 last season.
Mountain Island Charter at Christ the King: Mountain Island Charter leads the all time series 4-1 but Christ the King won 27-20 last season.

The Gastonia Honey Hunters’ Mauro “Goose” Gozzo was named Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Manager of the Year for the 2nd straight season on Thursday.
It’s the 2nd straight season Gozzo has won the honor and marks the 1st time in ALPB history a manager has won the award in back-to-back seasons.
The only manager in Gastonia’s ALPB history, Gozzo is 221-157 for the Honey Hunters and is 293-235 overall in his career.
A former major league pitcher who played for 4 major league organizations, Gozzo led Gastonia to 2nd-place finished in both halves of the Southern Division race this past season before upsetting 1st-place finisher High Point in the ALPB semifinals.
“I am honored to be named Manager of the Year for the 2023 season,” Gozzo said in a news release. “This award would not have been possible without the talented players, (hitting coach) Chuckie “Ballgame” Stewart, our trainer Anna McCraw and especially Assistant General Manager, Brady Salisbury. Thank you to the Atlantic League for this recognition.”
