10-31-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football, girls tennis and soccer, College football, Middle school soccer, volleyball and wrestling, Auto racing
By Richard Walker
Two days after an overtime victory over the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors, the Charlotte Hornets appeared in great position to win a second straight contest that would give them a winning record for the first month of the season.
Instead, a 15-point halftime lead wasn’t enough for Charlotte to hold off a spirited rally by the Sacramento Kings in their 115-108 victory in front of 12,020 at Spectrum Center on Monday night.
It was the Hornets’ first loss in a game this season in which they led by double figures and despite building 34-24 and 67-52 leads after the first two quarters. But the Kings (2-4) blitzed the Hornets 37-18 in the third quarter and held off a late Charlotte rally for the victory.
P.J. Washington (28 points, 5 rebounds), Kelly Oubre (16 points), Dennis Smith (15 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals), Jalen McDaniels (13 points), Gordon Hayward (12 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists) and Mason Plumlee (12 points, 10 rebounds) led Charlotte.

Two Gardner-Webb players earned Big South Conference honors after the Bulldogs’ 48-40 homecoming win over Bryant last Saturday.
Linebacker William McRainey was named defensive player of the week and tight end Jonathan Burns was named freshman of the week.
McRainey had 11 tackles (eight solo), one sack and two pass break-ups. He had five tackles in the fourth quarter, and his PBU with 19.3 seconds left in the game on fourth down at the GWU 32-yard line ended Bryant’s comeback attempt.
Burns made the most of his first career start with three catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Entering the contest with just four receptions for 40 yards and no scores, Burns first tied the game at 14 with a 71-yard catch-and-run to end the first quarter. His second catch, a 4-yard touchdown catch, put GWU ahead 48-29.
