College football

Kennesaw State 34, Gardner-Webb 30: The visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs gave No. 10 Kennesaw State all it could handle before a late touchdown lifted the Owls (7-1, 4-0) to victory.

After Gardner-Webb took a 30-27 lead on Narii Gaither’s touchdown reception with 43 seconds left, Kennesaw State used a long kickoff return and three straight pass completions, including the game-winner of 15 yards to Xavier Hill.

Gardner-Webb racked up 27 first downs and 489 yards total offense on the nation’s No. 7 defense on the wet, rainy day.

Bailey Fisher completed 31 of 48 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns passing and had seven rushes for 23 yards and another touchdown.

Gardner-Webb returns to action next Saturday at Hampton, Va., at 1 p.m.

Western Kentucky 45, Charlotte 13: Losing starting quarterback Chris Reynolds to a hand injury was bad enough then the Charlotte 49ers’ defense yielded 469 yards total offense to the leading offense in Conference USA was a bad combination.

Reynolds’ 25-game streak as a starter came to an end and celebrated Texas A&M transfer James Foster filled in.

Foster accounted for 156 yards total offense and Charlotte’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard run with 9:40 left in the first half.

“I thought James did some good things,” Charlotte coach Will Healy said. “I’m proud of how he competed. I’m proud of how he’s prepared. He was ready for a moment like this. He’s going to get better. He gave us opportunities to put some points on the board. He’s a competitive dude.”

But after Jonathan Cruz’s 56-yard field with 3:16 left in the first brought Charlotte within 21-13, the 49ers wouldn’t score again.

Charlotte (4-4, 2-2) hosts Rice next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in its next game.

The Carolina Panthers will get a boost to their defense on Sunday as they look to snap a four-game losing streak.

Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, acquired in trade earlier this season, was activated on Saturday and can play in Sunday’s game at the Atlanta Falocons.

Gilmore was on the physically unable to perform list when the Panthers traded for him. He was eligible to play last week but the Panthers gave him another week to heal.

The 2019 NFL defensive player of the year who hails from nearby Rock Hill, S.C., Gilmore will join a cornerback group that has relied on Donte Jackson, A.J. Bouye, and Keith Taylor Jr. in recent weeks.
