10-3-21 roundup: Pro football and baseball, College football, High school football and boys soccer, Middle school football, softball and golf

By Richard Walker

A strong start and fast finish wasn’t enough for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at AT&T Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys.

And the Cowboys used a streak of 20 straight points to take a 36-28 victory and knock Carolina from the unbeaten ranks in the NFL.

The Panthers (3-1) were seeking their third 4-0 start in team history and took a 14-13 first half lead behind Sam Darnold’s fourth and fifth touchdowns runs of the season.

The Cowboys (3-1) scored the next 20 points take control of the game and were able to survive two second-half Darnold touchdown passes to D.J. Moore that pulled the Panthers within 36-28 with 4:31 to play.

But Dallas picked up two first downs and was able to kill the rest of the game clock to seal the victory.

Moore finished with eight catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 34 catches (on 39 targets) for 398 yards and three touchdowns in four games this season.

Carolina, which fell to 2-9 all-time in games following Thursday Night Football, also saw its kicker miss another field goal.

That storyline has been troubling for the Panthers and coach Matt Rhule since the preseason when former Panthers kicker Joey Slye made one of two extra points and five of eight field goals before being released.

The team acquired Ryan Santoso for the final preseason game where he made all three of his extra points and both of his field goal tries. But after Santoso went one of two on extra points and two of two on field goals in the regular season opener, he was released and team signed Zane Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is not nine of 10 on extra points and three of five on field goals after missing a 54-yarder in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys.

Dallas is now 10-5 all-time against the Panthers and snapped a two-game Carolina winning streak in the rivalry.

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ 2021 schedule (with results):
