The Charlotte Hornets matched their best five-game start in team history with a come-from-behind 120-111 victory at the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

In Wednesday’s win, Charlotte also rallied to win after trailing by double digits as the Hornets fell behind 20-8 early in the first quarter before taking a halftime lead at 64-61 and taking chaege of the contest with a strong fourth quarter.

Miles Bridges (31 points, 6 rebounds), Gordon Hayward (24 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Jalen McDaniels (16 points), Mason Plumlee (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Cody Martin (12 points) led a balanced Hornets’ attack that also got seven points, six rebounds and three assists from LaMelo Ball; Ball played 24 minutes are two first quarter fouls limited some of his playing time.

Middle school football

Longtime rivals Crest and Shelby will meet for the 2021 Tri-County Conference championship game on Thursday at Crest High School.

The series between the two schools began in 1976 when they were junior highs and Thursday’s game is the 63rd meeting between the schools; Shelby leads the all-time series 33-27-2.

In the junior high era that lasted from 1976 to 1986, the schools met twice a season as each school had varsity and junior varsity teams; Shelby had an 8-3-1 series lead in varsity games and the schools tied 5-5-1 in junior varsity matchups.

Since the middle school era began in 1987, Shelby holds a 20-19 series advantage including Crest’s 14-12 win on Oct. 14 in the regular season. That win snapped a three-game Shelby win streak and Thursday’s meeting is the fourth time the teams are meeting in the Tri-County championship games.

Crest won the 2010 and 2011 meetings with Shelby winning the 2014 matchup.

Shelby is 7-1 overall and Crest 6-1. Crest advanced with a 38-12 semifinal win over Kings Mountain and Shelby advanced with a 16-12 victory over East Lincoln.
