As the No. 1 overall pick in the most recent NFL draft, odds are Carolina Panthers rookie Bryce Young will have an outstanding career.
Since the 1970 draft, he’s the 27th quarterback to be chosen No. 1 overall.
And of his 26 predecessors, 19 were eventual Pro Bowlers, 9 were eventual Super Bowl champions and 4 have already been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
But only 1 of them quarterbacked their team to a winning record and playoff berth.
That players was Andrew Luck in the 2012 season when he started all 16 regular season games for the Indianapolis Colts (11-5) and their playoff loss at the Baltimore Ravens.
What it means is that Panthers’ fans will have to have patience to see how Young progresses as he spends this week on the team’s bye.
With Young starting 5 of the 1st 6 games of this season, 26 of the 27 No. 1 overall quarterback selections started at least 1 game.
Barring a complete turnaround by the Panthers – they’re currently 0-6 – Young seems destined to give the top picks a 25th losing record in 26 rookie seasons.
Some others include each of the current Hall of Famers as Terry Bradshaw went 3-5 in his Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie season of 1970, John Elway went 4-6 in his Denver Broncos’ rookie season of 1983, Troy Aikman went 0-11 in his Dallas Cowboys’ rookie season of 1989 and Peyton Manning went 3-13 in his Colts’ rookie season of 1998.
In his 1st 5 games, Young’s 6 touchdowns to 4 interceptions is actually quite effective compared to some of his No. 1 counterparts.
Bradshaw had the most interceptions thrown (24) and had 6 touchdown tosses. Other quarterbacks who struggled with poor ratios were Aikman (9 TDs-18 INTs), the 2002 Houston Texans’ David Carr (9-15), the 2004 New York Giants’ Eli Manning (6-9), the 2005 San Francisco 49ers’ Alex Smith (1-11), the 2009 Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford (13-20), the 2016 Los Angeles Rams’ Jared Goff (5-7) and the 2021 Jacksonville Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence (12-17).
Ironically, the best ratio came from the last No. 1 overall pick before Young that played for the Panthers, that being the 2018 Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield. Mayfield had 22 TD throws to 15 interceptions.
Others to throw for 20 or more TDs were Peyton Manning (26 TDs-28 INTs), the 2011 Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton (21-17), Luck (23-18), the 2015 Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Jameis Winston (22-15) and the 2019 Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray (20-12).
