A big day in the national spotlight ended with a thud for the Charlotte 49ers Thursday night in a disappointing 38-9 home loss to Florida Atlantic.
Earlier Thursday, the school officially accepted an invitation to join the American Athletic Conference. The change of conference of leaving Conference USA had been reported on Monday. League officials will determine when the 49ers athletic programs will join its new conference.
“Since UNC Charlotte’s founding just 75 years ago, we have had many transformative milestones, and this is certainly one of those moments,” UNC Charlotte chancellor Sharon L. Gaber said in a news release. “This invitation by The American not only recognizes the accomplishments of our University and athletics program to date, but it also demonstrates belief in our rising trajectory. We are a university on the move, shaping what’s next for our city, our region and beyond.”
Added 49ers Director of Athletics Mike Hill: “This is a moment of celebration for Niner Nation and the culmination of years of hard, strategic work to position us for championship-level success. As Charlotte’s hometown team, our membership in The American provides us with an incredible platform to grow our program as well as share the remarkable story of our extraordinary institution and city.”
Charlotte will join existing existing American Athletic Conference members Southern Methodist University, Temple University, Tulane University, the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, the University of Tulsa and Wichita State University along with an in-state rival, East Carolina University. Florida Atlantic University, Rice University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at San Antonio are joining Charlotte as new members of the conference.
“We thank the American Athletic Conference and Commissioner Mike Aresco for this recognition of what Charlotte will bring to the league. We are excited about joining this outstanding group of competitors under Mike’s leadership,” Hill said. “We are also extremely grateful to our colleagues in Conference USA for providing us with such a wonderful home over the years. I especially want to acknowledge Commissioner Judy MacLeod, who always leads with class and represents everything good about college athletics.”
In Thursday night’s game that was televised on CBS Sports Network, an early 49ers’ lead evaporated quickly in the second half as the Owls (4-3, 2-1) handed Charlotte its first league loss.
Charlotte (4-3, 2-1) had been off to its best start in league play in school history and led 3-0 in the first quarter and 9-7 at the half before Florida Atlantic scored 21 points in the third quarter.
The Owls’ defense pressure 49ers quarterback Chris Reynolds into three turnovers before he was replaced in the fourth quarter by James Foster. Reynolds finished with 219 yards passing and one touchdown and eight yards rushing. Former Shelby High standout Calvin Camp led Charlotte’s 77-yard rushing attack with 38 yards on seven carries.
N’Kosi Perry led Florida Atlantic’s offense to 427 yards total offense with 225 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Here’s a preview of Friday’s games in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:
Cramer at North Gaston
Series: Cramer leads 6-1
Storyline: North Gaston comes off its snapping a 24-game losing streak while holds hopes of winning its last two games to wrap up a winning season.
Huss at Crest
Series: Crest leads 13-7
Storyline: Crest is already assured of playing for the Big South 3A title next week at Kings Mountain but seeks to take an unbeaten league record into the game while Huss seeks to avoid its third winless season in history; The Huskies went 0-10 in 1965 and 0-11 in 1998.
Kings Mountain at Ashbrook
Series: Ashbrook leads 17-11-2
Storyline: One of the oldest rivalries in local history – it started in 1922 – resumes with Kings Mountain looking to stay unbeaten in league entering next week’s Big South 3A title game against Crest and Ashbrook seeking its second victory.
South Point at Forestview
Series: South Point leads 20-3
Storyline: The winner claims third place in the Big South 3A this season and likely solidifies a playoff berth. Forestview seeks its first-ever two-game win streak over South Point after winning 47-21 at home in 2019 in their last meeting.
Burns at Cherryville
Series: Burns leads 18-9
Storyline: A longtime local rivalry is resumed for the first time since 1994 with Burns preparing for next week’s Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference title game at Shelby – the two schools played every year from 1968 to 1994.
Shelby at East Gaston
Series: Shelby leads 15-1
Storyline: The only East Gaston win in the series – 22-6 at home in 1978 – came in the Warriors’ first-ever league title season. East Gaston has to win this matchup and then root for Shelby to beat Burns next week to get a share of this year’s championship.
North Iredell at East Lincoln
Series: East Lincoln leads 11-8
Storyline: The host Mustangs have won three straight after dropping their first two Western Foothills 3A games. Another win would send them into next week’s game at East Lincoln still harboring hopes of a second-place finish.
West Iredell at North Lincoln
Series: North Lincoln leads 4-2
Storyline: The host Knights can wrap up no worse than a tie for second place in the league with a win over a school they haven’t played since 2016.
Maiden at Lincolnton
Series: Lincolnton leads 25-22-2
Storyline: A series that started in 1925 resumes with unbeaten Maiden seeking its sixth straight victory in the rivalry. Lincolnton enters the game on a four-game winning streak that came after the Wolves had lost nine straight games dating to the 2021 spring season.
West Lincoln at East Burke
Series: West Lincoln leads 2-1
Storyline: The visiting Rebels have a chance to strengthen their playoff positioning against a school they have routed in their last two meetings – 48-0 in 2018 and 69-21 in 2019.
Mountain Island Charter at Winston-Salem Carver
Series: First meeting
Storyline: The visiting Raptors can stay in second place with what would be their eighth win of the season.
