10-20-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football, girls tennis and volleyball, College football, Middle school football, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

East Lincoln and Kings Mountain have historically enjoyed high school football success.

They’ve also finished with unbeaten regular seasons.

Both are 8-0 overall entering Friday’s games, which makes them two wins shy of accomplishing a feat that has led to great success in each program’s history.

East Lincoln has had three unbeaten regular seasons in its 56-year history – in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

With future NFL linebacker Chazz Surratt as a receiver in 2012 and a quarterback in 2014 when the Mustangs won their two state championships for teams that went 16-0. And in Surratt’s senior year of 2015 in which he was named Parade magazine’s National Player of the Year, an injury knocked Surratt out of a Western finals loss that ended East Lincoln’s season at 14-1.

Other standouts on the East Lincoln roster in those year were quarterback Garrett Young and receivers Sage Surratt (Chazz’s younger brother) and Cameron Dollar.

Kings Mountain has had seven unbeaten regular seasons since it began playing football 100 years ago in 1922 – in 1926, 1955, 1956, 1963, 1964, 1996 and the 2021 spring season.

In the 1926, 1955, 1956, 1963 and 1996 seasons, the Mountaineers had at least one tie, highlighted the school’s lone state title year of 1956 when they finished 10-0-1 with a lone blemish a 6-all tie against Shelby in the ninth game.

In that 1956 season, future Gaston County Sports Hall of Famer Shu Carlton was head coach as Kings Mountain won the old the Western N.C. Actitivies Association Western Conference state title in a 7-6 victory over Lenoir in a game played at Lenoir-Rhyne College.

The Mountaineers were led by the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher Ken Baity and fellow all-conference linemen Keith Layton and David Marlowe.

In the championship game, Doug Rathbone’s touchdown in the second quarter was followed by J.L. Stewart’s extra point that proved decisive when Lenoir scored a touchdown but missed its extra point in the fourth quarter.

Here’s a look at this week’s Cleveland/Gaston/Lincoln games:

Ashbrook at Kings Mountain: Ashbrook leads all time 17-12-2 in a series that began in 1922 when it was Gastonia against Kings Mountain. The Mountaineers won 51-0 last season.
