10-2-22 roundup: Pro basketball, football and soccer, High school football, College football, Middle school softball, Auto racing

On a day dedicated to the memory of Sam Mills to honor his recent Pro Football Hall of Fame induction, Carolina Panthers’ fans abandoned Bank of America Stadium in droves during the fourth quarter of their 26-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Those who did stay – and 69,810 tickets were distributed – booed the team and its quarterback, Baker Mayfield, after the Cardinals rallied from a 10-3 halftime deficit to win.
Mayfield completed 22 of 36 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown but also included two interceptions and five passes batted at the line of scrimmage.
A defensive touchdown – Frankie Luvu’s 33-yard interception return early in the second quarter – and a 54-yard Eddy Piniero field goal gave the Panthers a 10-3 lead at halftime.
But it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals scored the first 23 points of the second half until a late 13-yard Mayfield-to-Christian McCaffrey gave the Panthers their only offensive touchdown.
McCaffrey, considered questionable pregame with a thigh injury, finished with 27 yards rushing and caught nine passes for 81 yards. D.J. Moore had six catches (on 11 targets) for 50 yards.
Here’s the full Carolina Panthers schedule for the 2022 season:
