10-17-21 roundup: Pro football and basketball, High school football, boys soccer and volleyball, College football

By Richard Walker

Despite a disappointing offense and a suddenly struggling defense, the Carolina Panthers forced overtime with the visiting Minnesota Vikings.

But the same struggles the defense endured throughout the day showed again as the Vikings drove 75 yards on the lone possession of the extra period for a 34-28 victory that pinned a third straight defeat on the Panthers.

“Obviously disappointed in the outcome of that game,” Carolina coach Matt Rhule said. “We made a little run at the end to push it to overtime and I was proud to show that type of grit and all that, but for most of the game they certainly outplayed us.
“As I told our team, we’re going to have to execute and make some plays that are there offensively. As I’m sure you all know and will ask me, it was not very good until we went to the rally mode at the end, the two minute at the end, and were able to make some plays defensively.”

The late score was the only time the Panthers drove for any significant distance for a touchdown on Sunday; The 96-yard drive came after Carolina’s first two TD drives came on an 18-yard drive after a fumble recovery and on a blocked punt return.

Even with the 96-yard drive, the Panthers finished with 306 yards total offense and had two lost fumbles, one pass interception and quarterback Sam Darnold completed 17 of 41 throws and was sacked four times.

“We just couldn’t find a rhythm, couldn’t execute,” Darnold said. “We weren’t executing at a high enough level like I said before. Again, we have to watch the tape and figure out kind of how we can execute better and what that looks like.”

The loss dropped the Panthers to 3-3 on the season entering next Sunday’s road game at the New York Giants.
