10-16-22 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school football, College football and baseball, Middle school football, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

The Carolina Panthers had a fast start in the Steve Wilks era.

Unfortunately, a halftime lead wasn’t enough for the visitors as the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams rallied for a 24-10 victory over the Panthers on Sunday.

And a sideline issue between wide receiver Robbie Anderson and wide receivers coach Joe Dailey in the first half that was revisited in the second half and resulted in Wilks sending Anderson to the locker room stole much of the postgame attention.

Wilks defended his decision afterward and Anderson admitted he was “confused” afterward.

Given that some media reports indicate the Panthers are gauging trade interest around the league on Anderson and running back Christian McCaffrey, a resolution on the Anderson situation could come sooner than later.

As for McCaffrey, he was easily the team’s most effective offensive player on a day in which quarterback P.J. Walker was knocked out of the game and place in concussion protocol in the fourth quarter.

McCaffrey accounted for 158 of the team’s 203 yards total offense, with him getting touches on five of the first seven plays from scrimmage for 58 yards and three first downs.

But even as the team’s NFL-leading third defensive touchdown – Donte Jackson’s 30-yard interception return – helped Carolina to a 10-7 halftime lead, the offense struggled in the last three quarters.

The Panthers picked up 90 yards in their first two offensive drives and held possession for 11:05 of the first quarter before the Rams held Carolina without an offensive touchdown.

Here’s the full Carolina Panthers schedule for the 2022 season:
