A fast start for the Carolina Panthers wasn’t enough to get the 1st win of the 2023 season against powerful Miami Dolphins in a 42-21 loss on Sunday.
Carolina roared ahead 14-0 and racked up 10 first downs before Miami got its initial first down.
But the Dolphins, who had the most total yards after the 1st 5 games of any team in NFL history, got untracked after falling behind.
Miami scored the next 35 points and cruised to the comfortable victory.
After Carolina forced Miami’s league-low 11th and 12th punts of the season to open the game while the Panthers took an early lead, Miami finished the game with 424 total yards and 23 first downs.
The 5-1 Dolphins’ start is its best start in 21 years while the Panthers fell to 0-6 for only the 2nd time in franchise history; The 1998 team started 0-7 before finishing 4-12.

The Charlotte Hornets got their 1st preseason victory on Sunday but had to sweat out a 117-115 home victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Powered by the starting lineup of P.J. Washington (31 points), Terry Rozier (19 points, 6 assists), LaMelo Ball (16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists), Mark Williams (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Brandon Miller (8 points, 7 rebounds), the Hornets led after each quarter and were up by as many as 18 points at 92-74 with 2:52 left in the 3rd quarter.
Charlotte, which had no double-figure scorers off the bench, still led 109-95 with 6:45 to play before the Thunder closed the game on a 20-8 surge.
Also, Oklahoma City missed a driving layup just before the buzzer that would’ve sent the game into overtime.
