Burns rallied late in regulation then won a double overtime thriller over visiting East Gaston 45-38 on Friday night in one of the season’s most exciting games of the year.

Trailing 35-28 late in regulation, Burns quarterback Ben Mauney threw his fourth touchdown pass to L.J. Allen with 1.3 seconds remaining and Ansley Camacho’s extra point forced overtime.

East Gaston’s Luis Nunez and Burns’ Camacho kept it tied at 38 after the first overtime.

Burns’ Jeremiah Burns scored on a 10-yard run on the first play of the second overtime and East Gaston was stopped on downs as the Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference.

East Gaston (5-3, 3-1) saw its longest winning streak since 2006 snapped at four games.

Kings Mountain 41, Cramer 28: A.J. Richardson had three touchdown runs as Kings Mountain (7-1, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the Big South 3A Conference.

Crest 30, Forestview 0: Mari Adams had one touchdown and three two-point conversions as the Chargers (5-2, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the Big South 3A Conference.

North Gaston 20, Huss 19: The visiting Wildcats (1-7, 1-4) snapped a 24-game losing streak while keeping Huss (0-6, 0-5) winless.

Shelby 63, Bessemer City 0: Jaylin Lee threw five touchdown passes as Shelby rolled to a 56-0 halftime lead before cruising for the victory.

Thomas Jefferson 20, Cherryville 12: Thomas Jefferson rallied from a 12-7 deficit to take the victory.

East Lincoln 42, St. Stephens 6: The Mustangs win their third straight game against a longtime rival of the school.

Lincolnton 35, East Burke 20: Lincolnton evened its record at 4-4 with a fourth straight victory.

West Lincoln 35, West Caldwell 12: The Rebels won their homecoming game to improve to 6-2 overall.

Mountain Island Charter 47, Bishop McGuinness 0: The Raptors (7-1) extended their winning strea to three games with the Catawba Shores 1A Conference victory.

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss his third straight game on Sunday – and 16th of the Panthers’ last 22 games – after his coach Matt Rhule declared his out with the hamstring injury he suffered in the first quarter of the 24-9 win at Houston on Sept. 23.

Also out for the Panthers on Sunday will be linebacker Shaq Thompson (foot) and linebacker Kamal Martin (concussion) and questionable are offensive lineman Deonte Brown (knee) and cornerback C.J. Henderson (shoulder).

Pro basketball

One day after announcing the free agent signing of LiAngelo Ball, the Charlotte Hornets announced they were waiving the forward.

The move leaves the Hornets with an active roster of 18 players though it’s considered a move that will allow LiAngelo Ball, the older brother of Charlotte starting point guard LaMelo Ball, to be signed by Charlotte’s G-League franchise the Greensboro Swarm.

Also on Friday, the Hornets announced starting forward Gordon Hayward had cleared NBA health and safety protocols and was cleared to return to practice and Kelly Oubre (sprained right ankle) also returned to practice.
