The Carolina Panthers will have a new starting quarterback on Sunday when they visit the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Interim head coach Steve Wilks announced P.J. Walker will start and said he was hopeful injured previous starter Baker Mayfield (ankle) would be the backup.

Walker is 2-0 as a NFL starter, winning one game each in 2020 and 2021 for the Panthers.

If Mayfield isn’t active in Sunday’s game, practice squad quarterback Jacob Eason is expected to be elevated to the active roster to be Walker’s backup.

Carolina’s other quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Matt Corral, remain on injured reserve with Darnold now eligible to return but Corral out for the season.
