1-6-22 roundup: High school basketball and football, Pro football, basketball and soccer, College football and basketball

By Richard Walker

When Kings Mountain returns to action on Friday in a Big South 3A Conference home game against South Point, the Mountaineers will be playing the first game since senior guard Zeke Cannedy tied a 67-year record.

Zeke Cannedy

Cannedy tied a Cleveland County record set in 1954 with 55 points in Kings Mountain’s 83-74 Mountaineer Classic tournament championship game loss to Gaston Day.

The record had been held since the winter of 1954 by old Lattimore High’s Buddy Weathers, who scored 55 points in a game against old Bethware High.

Cannedy became the fourth 50-point single game scorer in county history; Others were Crest’s Harvey Petty with 51 points in a Jan. 24, 1989 game against West Mecklenburg and Shelby’s Gabe DeVoe with 52 points in a Jan. 8, 2014 game against Statesville.

Here’s the full schedule of girls/boys doubleheaders (unless noted) slated for Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties:

Ashbrook at Cramer (boys only)
Crest at North Gaston
Huss at Forestview
Kings Mountain at South Point
Cherryville at Bessemer City
Shelby at Highland Tech

High school football

West Charlotte High football coach Sam Greiner and his wife Connie remained alive after the first night of the 33rd season of CBS’ “Amazing Race” competition.

The Greiners finished seven of 11 competitors in the first round – last place 11th was eliminated – and finished second out of 10 in the second round during an event held in London, England and taped in early 2020.

The second episode of the series will air next Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Sam Greiner has coached at Harding, Hickory Ridge and West Charlotte high schools with a 33-28 overall record highlighted by Harding’s 14-1 record during a 2017 N.C. Class 4A championship season; The Rams won their first playoff game that season since 1989 and first state title since 1953.
