Brad Lambert is going back to the future.

Brad Lambert

The inaugural Charlotte 49ers head football coach has been hired as defensive coordinator at Wake Forest for head coach Dave Clawson.

“Brad Lambert is an extremely accomplished coach and has a long track record of helping young men achieve great success on and off the field throughout his career,” Clawson said in a Wake Forest news release. “With his experience as a head coach and leading some of the top defensive units in the country, he will come to Winston-Salem and make an immediate impact on our program. His background at Wake Forest will help him hit the ground running as he builds great relationships with our players and gets on the recruiting trail.”

Lambert joins the Demon Deacons staff after helping being a co-defensive coordinator at Purdue this past season as the Boilermakers won nine games for the first time since 2003. Lambert, hired to start up the Charlotte program in 2011, served six seasons as 49ers head coach with a 22-48 record from 2013 to 2018.

A former defensive back at Kansas State, Lambert also has been an assistant coach at Oklahoma (1988-89), Marshall (1990-95 and 2019-20), Georgia (1996-2000) and at Wake Forest (2001-10).
