When Biff Poggi was hired as Charlotte 49ers head coach in November, he vowed to improve the team’s roster.

Based on his incoming recruiting class, that’s happening for the 49ers.

Most notably, Poggi got an attention-grabbing commitment on ESPN2 during Tuesday’s Under Armour All-American Game from four-star running back Durell Robinson.

Robinson, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Baltimore, Md., Saint Frances, is the highest-rated incoming running back recruit in program history.

Since the official signing day of Dec. 21 when Poggi signed 29 players, Robinson is the third addition to the class; The others were junior college defensive back Dontez Fagan and 6-9, 325-pound junior college offensive lineman Jai’lun Hampton.

Fagan, a 5-11, 175-pounder from Oklahoma City, Okla., and Independence Community College, committed on Dec. 23 and Hampton of Detroit, Mich., and Iowa Western Community College committed on Dec. 25.

The Memphis Grizzlies rolled past the Charlotte Hornets 131-107 on Wednesday night.

The loss was Charlotte’s third straight and dropped the team to 10-29 on the season.

LaMelo Ball (23 points, 4 rebounds, 12 assists), Terry Rozier (21 points), Jalen McDaniels (16 points, 7 rebounds), P.J. Washington (15 points) and Mason Plumlee (7 points, 10 rebounds) led the Hornets.

Charlotte FC on Wednesday announced defender Harrison Afful has been re-signed through 2023 with a club option for 2024.

Afful, who appeared in 21 league matches in Charlotte FC’s inaugural season after signing as a free agent, will also work with the Club’s scouting department in a player professional development role.

Afful also will enter his ninth season in MLS with more than 200 league appearances in all competitions.

“Harry played an important role in our 2022 season, and we’re excited to have him back in our locker room for the upcoming campaign,” Charlotte FC Sporting Director Zoran Krneta said in a team news release. “His versatility and leadership are incredibly valuable, and we’re looking forward to seeing him on the pitch once again in 2023. Beyond his impact on the field, he is a person of tremendous character and football knowledge. We are thrilled he will be spending his time off the pitch with Thomas, Lisandro, and our excellent scouting department to set the foundations of what is sure to be an excellent career off the pitch once his playing days are done.”

Charlotte FC begins preseason preparations for the 2023 MLS season next week; The team opens its second season on Feb. 25 at home at 7:30 p.m. against the New England Revolution.
