1-29-23 roundup: Pro basketball and football, High school basketball, Middle school basketball
By Richard Walker
Three local high school basketball players are closing in school scoring records.

Piedmont Community Charter’s Grace East surpassed 1,000 points last week and now has 1,019 points in 75 career games for the Patriots.
She’s the third 1,000-point scorer in school history and has passed 2018 graduate Courtney Williams’ 1,017 career points. She’s now only 18 points behind school record-holder Demoniya Cole, also a 2018 graduate; Cole finished with 1,037 points.
And Bessemer City’s Janiya Adams and Randall Pettus are closing in on becoming their school’s all-time leading girls and boys scorers.
Adams has 1,663 points in 75 career games for the Yellow Jackets, leaving her 111 points behind 2002 graduate Shameka Smith’s 1,774 career points.
And Bessemer City’s Randall Pettus is closing in on becoming his school’s all-time leading boys scorer. He has 1,873 career points and is 34 points shy of the school’s all-time leader Tony Byers’ 1,907 points.
Byers for years was Gaston County’s all-time scorer with 2,375 career points as he scored 468 points as a freshman at Bessemer City’s old Lincoln Academy in the 1966-67 season; Lincoln Academy was an all-African-American high school that turned into a junior high after that season when Gaston County Schools became fully integrated.
