1-20-22 roundup: High school basketball, football and wrestling, College basketball and football, Pro basketball and football

Bessemer City didn’t have to look far for a new athletic director with the departure of longtime athletic director and football coach Larry Boone.

The Yellow Jackets announced on Thursday that girls basketball head coach Billy James will become the school’s athletic director.
A 1986 Bessemer City High graduate, James was the school’s all-time passing leader for 24 years before Xavier Logan’s 3,223 career passing yards exceeded the 2,796 yards James had from 1983 to 1985.
James has been the Yellow Jackets’ head girls basketball coach since 2015 and his 49 victories rank fourth all-time in school history. Last season, James guided Bessemer City to its first girls basketball conference title since 2001 and only its second in history.
High school football
East Gaston’s Justin Hill announced on twitter Thursday night he had committed to play at Emory & Henry.
Hill, the offensive player of the year in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference this season, rushed for 2,023 yards and 20 touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 8-5 record last fall.
