The Carolina Panthers’ late-season playoff push came to an end on Sunday.
Despite building leads of 14-0 and 21-10, the Panthers couldn’t stop veteran Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they rallied for a 30-24 victory.
The result clinched the division title for Tampa Bay and gave Brady his 19th divisional title in his 23-year NFL career.
Brady passed for 432 yards and three touchdowns – each of them to Mike Evans. Evans caught 10 passes for 207 yards.
The loss wasted arguably Sam Darnold’s best statistical performance as a Panthers quarterback with 341 yards passing and three touchdowns and 20 yards rushing.
The only downside for Darnold were three turnovers – two lost fumbles and a pass interception – that were his first turnovers of the season.
Darnold completed TD passes to Tommy Tremble, D.J. Moore and Shi Smith as the Panthers built their early leads.
But Tampa Bay scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a 21-10 deficit into a 30-21 lead.
Tampa Bay (8-8) will host a playoff game during the Jan. 14-16 weekend while the Panthers (6-10) were eliminated from postseason play.
